July, the Month for Connection

This month's theme is Connection. While technology has made it easier to stay in touch, nothing replaces genuine human connection. A conversation, a shared laugh, or simply spending time together reminds us how important it is to belong.

I am not much of a football fan, but when Scotland qualified for the World Cup, I made a spur of the moment decision to take my sons to Miami to watch the Scotland v Brazil match! It was never really about the football. It was about sharing an experience, making memories together, and feeling part of something bigger than ourselves. Surrounded by thousands of fellow Scots, there was a real sense of warmth and togetherness. We were simply there to support our national team, standing alongside our compatriots and enjoying the occasion together.

The 2026 World Cup has been a wonderful reminder that sport has a unique way of bringing people together. Whether it is cheering from the stands, singing with strangers who soon feel like friends, or sharing an unforgettable day with family, those moments of connection stay with us long after the final whistle.

Connection is also about looking after yourself. The mind and body are closely linked, and every time we learn something new or think differently, we create new connections in our brains. My team is incredibly important to me, and we meet regularly to learn, share ideas, and grow together so we can continue providing the very best care.

At Westbourne, we are passionate about creating community. Through our meditation sessions, yoga classes and community groups, we bring people together to connect with others and reconnect with themselves. As International Self-Care Day approaches on 24 July, take a moment to think about how you care for yourself. For me, it is a good night's sleep, singing, and walking my dog in the woods.

New Fertility Service

We are also excited to launch our new fertility service. Our approach combines medical assessments with evidence-based holistic support for individuals and couples. Our team includes myself and nurse Diane, alongside our fertility specialists in acupuncture, nutrition, massage and homeopathy.

We are particularly pleased to introduce sperm DNA fragmentation testing, helping us provide a more complete picture of male fertility and ensuring both partners are fully supported throughout their journey.

Sperm DNA Fragmentation Testing

We are delighted to introduce Sperm DNA Fragmentation Testing as part of our new fertility service at Westbourne. While a standard semen analysis looks at sperm count, movement, and shape, this advanced test assesses the quality of the DNA carried within the sperm. High levels of DNA fragmentation can affect fertility, embryo development, and pregnancy outcomes. By gaining a more complete understanding of male fertility, we can provide more personalised advice and create a tailored plan that supports both partners on their journey to parenthood.

Breathwork with Heather

Nature made us and she made a good job.  How we use our breath is fundamental in the ongoing care of ourselves and all that in being human we were given by nature; our health, vitality and energy, our positive outlook, optimism, and our longevity. A healthy baby naturally breathes well, in and out through the nose, using all the muscles of its trunk, abdomen, sides and back involved in the breathing process.  Long held stress, anxiety and tension will affect this natural breathing pattern causing us to develop a limited and passive breathing pattern.

Complete health is where every cell in the body receives enough oxygen.  A short breathing check up will reveal where the breath has been limited and a breathing correction can be made to bring the pattern back into sync with a more full, correct and health giving breathing pattern. It is never too late to start this process, and no matter what is happening in your life, you will find that correcting your breathing can bring about positive changes on all levels.

Sound Medicine Workshop

Wednesday 15th July, 7–8.30pm

Join Dr Veronica for an evening of guided meditation using singing bowls, gongs and chimes.

Sound has been used in healing traditions for centuries. The vibrations created by these instruments interact gently with the body and nervous system, helping the mind settle and encouraging a state of deep relaxation.

During the session you will be guided into a calm meditative state while the sounds and frequencies unfold around you. Many people describe feeling a sense of spaciousness, clarity and calm afterwards.

There is nothing you need to bring with you. We provide mats, cushions, chairs and blankets so you can relax comfortably and enjoy the experience.

Ginger, Garlic and Herb Infused Honey

July is the perfect time to harvest fresh garlic, a kitchen staple that has been valued for both its flavour and its health benefits for centuries. Rich in natural plant compounds, garlic can help support the immune system and adds depth to a wide variety of dishes. This month, why not try this simple garlic-infused honey recipe? It is a delicious way to make the most of the season's harvest while giving your immune system a little extra support.

Ingredients

• 1 inch fresh ginger

• A handful of garlic cloves

• 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary

• 2 sprigs of fresh thyme

• 225g or 8 Oz of raw honey

• Glass jar with a lid

Method

Slice the ginger into 1/4 inch pieces, no need to peel it first. Crush the garlic cloves with the side of a knife to pop them out their peel. Place ginger slices, crushed garlic cloves, rosemary, and thyme into the empty jar. If needed, fold or break the stems of herbs in half to allow them to fit comfortably. Cover with honey, and let sit for at least a week to infuse. Use this infused honey within a year of making.

Health Benefits

Garlic contains natural compounds with antimicrobial properties, and could help reduce mucus production or help clear an upper respiratory infection. Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory effects and has traditionally been used to soothe sore throats and support the immune system. Rosemary and thyme are rich in antioxidants and have been used for centuries to support respiratory health. Combined with raw honey, which can help soothe an irritated throat and ease coughs, this simple homemade infusion is a comforting way to support your wellbeing.

Final thoughts

As July unfolds, we encourage you to make time for connection, with yourself, with others, and with your community. A simple conversation, checking in on a neighbour, or reaching out to someone you have not spoken to for a while can make a real difference. We believe that one of the most important parts of life is feeling connected and knowing you belong. Whatever July brings, we are here to support you with our wide range of bespoke medical and wellbeing therapies, helping you reconnect with yourself and those around you. We wish you a happy, healthy month ahead.
